FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: ions of substances in a gas stream bounded by extended electrodes are separated through superposition of an alternating-sign periodic uniform or non-uniform polarity asymmetric and unidirectional electric fields. The unidirectional electric field is varied and the spectrum of separated ions is recorded in form of a set of ion peaks. Before recording the spectrum for all ion peaks of substances under analysis, the parameter which characterises quadratic deviation of the peaks is determined. When recording each area of the spectrum where there might be a peak of the substances under analysis, the rate of varying the unidirectional electric field is selected depending on the value of the parameter which characterises mean-square deviation of that peak, based on the condition that, the higher the value of the parameter which characterises mean-square deviation of the peak, the higher the rate of varying the unidirectional electric field when recording the area of the spectrum on which that peak may be present.
EFFECT: invention increases selectivity and shortens the time for separating and detecting ions in a gas while maintaining sensitivity of analysis.
