FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: polarisation of input laser radiation is converted to circular polarisation using quarter-wave plate. Radiation is transmitted close to the normal at the input plane of a photorefractive crystal with section (100). Radiation transmitted through the crystal is directed by a mirror onto a reflecting surface which introduces phase modulation into the laser radiation. The phase-modulated laser beam is directed through a polariser onto a plane opposite the input plane. Polarisation of the signal beam is selected optimum for linear mode of transformation of phase modulation to power modulation. The output signal used is a signal beam transmitted through the crystal.
EFFECT: anti-parallel geometry provides a small spatial period of the hologram and high diffraction efficiency without applying external electric fields.
