FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to production of glass monoliths via a sol-gel process. The sol-gel process for producing glass monoliths involves adding pyrogenic silicon oxide to water at acidic pH ranging from 1.5 to 3.0. Silicon alkoxide is then added to the dispersed silicon oxide, whereby the silicon oxide/silicon alkoxide molar ratio ranges from 2.6 to 4.95 and adjusting pH in the range of 4.5-5. The sol solution is then fed into a container and the sol is then gelled into a wet gel, followed by drying the wet gel and sintering the dry gel to obtain a glass article.
EFFECT: obtaining large glass monoliths without cracks and having high light transmission.
