SUBSTANCE: method is proposed to define an area of power transmission and communication lines damage, consisting in radiation of harmonic oscillations of various frequencies into a power transmission and communication line serially in time and in subsequent determination of a reflection ratio G(fi) by received reflected signals. The distance to a defect is detected according to the following formula; xd=xmin+s·Δx, where xmin - the lower border of the possible defect position area, -Δx - pitch, s - number of maximum power value. To realise this method, a device is proposed to detect an area of power transmission and communication lines damage, comprising an indication unit connected to a computing unit, outputs of which are connected to inputs of a generator, a receiver and a switch accordingly. The device comprises a directional coupler connected with one of the inputs to the generator output, and with two other inputs - to according outputs of the switch connected to the receiver.
EFFECT: elimination of the dead zone with preservation of range of coverage and accuracy of distance measurement to the defect.
