FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: particle acceleration apparatus has one or more guide photonic bandgap (PBG) resonator, one or more PBG resonators being capable of generating local resonance electromagnetic fields for accelerating, focusing or directing particle beams of one of a plurality of electrons or a plurality of ions, wherein the accelerated particle beams come out of the PBG resonator. Further, the particle acceleration apparatus can have one or more PBG resonators with a shape and made from one or more materials, with optimised loss of radio-frequency energy.
EFFECT: optimisation involves obtaining the quality factor of the PBG cavity which is considerably higher than that of the equivalent normally conducting pill-box resonator.
