SUBSTANCE: device has a serial number recognising unit 38A which recognises given serial number characters to distinguish one banknote from another to obtain a result including the recognised character and/or an unrecognised erroneous character, a unit 38B for processing serial number recording conditions which evaluates whether the serial number recognition result satisfies a given recording condition, a database management unit 38E which records detailed information on the banknote, including the serial number recognition result, into a database 33. Thus, unnecessary recording of serial numbers can be avoided and the operating load on the user who enters the serial number is significantly reduced.

EFFECT: reduced operating load on the user and avoiding recording of serial numbers based on results of evaluating recording conditions.
