FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to methods of producing carbon sorbents. The method involves pyrolysis of used tyres to obtain a carbon residue, activation thereof with steam, cooling, further activation by periodically feeding water into the pyrolysis chamber in several steps. The process is carried out while periodically changing pressure in the pyrolysis chamber by 10-30% from the nominal pressure with period of 0.5-3.0 minutes. During each discharge of the vapour-gas mixture from the discharge cylinder into the top part of the pyrolysis chamber and during fixed state of the piston of the discharge cylinder after the discharge cycle, differential pressure above and below the carbon residue is continuously measured and recorded and gas permeability of the carbon residue is determined from the time it takes for the differential pressure to fall from the maximum to the minimum value. A differential manometer with electric remote signal transmission to a secondary display and recording device is connected with one cavity higher and the other below the carbon residue in the pyrolysis chamber.

EFFECT: high efficiency of the sorbent owing to estimation of its density and gas permeability during activation of the carbon residue of pyrolysis of used tyres.
