FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: in a selective catalytic reduction catalyst (5), which contains adsorption centres for nitrogen oxides, at higher than the operating temperature, ammonia-saturated exhaust gases are fed onto the selective catalytic reduction catalyst (5). At lower than the operating temperature, exhaust gases fed onto the selective catalytic reduction catalyst (5) are saturated with a substance which slows down adsorption of nitrogen oxides on corresponding adsorption centres of the selective catalytic reduction catalyst (5). To reduce total NOx emission to less than the given first value, ammonia-saturated exhaust gases are fed onto the selective catalytic reduction catalyst (5), and the content of NO2 in the total emission of NOx falls to a value lower than the given first value owing to that NO2 is converted by hydrocarbons accumulated in the selective catalytic reduction catalyst (5).
EFFECT: reduced emission of nitrogen dioxide by an internal combustion engine in a wide operating range at critically low temperatures of exhaust gases.
