FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: disclosed are methods and systems for automatically locking a video camera to an absolute coordinate system and for determining changes in the locking of the video camera. According to one aspect, the method comprises steps where: in each of at least two predetermined moments in time, a video camera is aimed at an object whose position in the absolute coordinate system with the centre at the location of the video camera is known at that moment in time, and the orientation of the video camera in its coordinate system is determined; and based on the determined orientation of the video camera and positions of the object, the turning of the coordinate system of the video camera in the absolute coordinate system is calculated. The calculated turning of the coordinate system of the video camera is used to recalculate coordinates of the observed object from the coordinate system of the video camera into the absolute coordinate system.

EFFECT: high accuracy of determining the position of an observed object.
