FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: water-absorbing polymer particles are described, the polymer particles having average sphericity of at least 0.84, content of hydrophobic solvent of less than 0.005 wt % and permeability of at least 5×10-7 cm3s/g and contain water-insoluble inorganic salts. Described also is a method of producing said water-absorbing polymer particles by polymerising droplets of a monomer solution containing a) at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer, having at least one acid group, b) at least one cross-linking agent, c) at least one initiator, d) water in the gas phase surrounding the droplets, wherein a water-insoluble salt is suspended in the monomer solution, and the monomer solution is fed in droplets into the gas phase to form a monodispersed droplet chain, wherein the polymer particles have mean diameter of at least 150 mcm, and wherein the process is carried out, if necessary, in the presence of a hydrophobic solvent. Use of said particles to obtain sanitary and hygiene products is also described.
