FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to a method of producing water-absorbent polymer particles. Described is a method of producing water-absorbent polymer particles which contain at least one cavity inside the particle through polymerisation of droplets of a monomer solution containing: a) at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer having at least one acid group, b) at least one crosslinker, c) at least one initiator, d) water, in the gaseous phase surrounding the droplets, the obtained polymer particles being re-crosslinked further, said re-crosslinked polymer particles being at least covered by water, an aqueous solution, alkanolamine, a polymer and/or wax. The invention also describes water-absorbent particles obtained using the method given above. The invention describes hygiene items containing said polymer particles.

EFFECT: high mechanical stability of polymer particles containing at least one cavity inside.
