FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to chemistry. A portion of said sulphur dioxide, contained in metallurgical furnace gas, is reduced to elementary sulphur and the other portion is converted to sulphuric acid or sulphate. A portion of the obtained elementary sulphur is removed from the gas. A portion of the obtained elementary sulphur remaining in the gas is oxidised to obtain an additional portion of sulphur dioxide, which is converted to sulphuric acid or sulphate. The elementary sulphur and sulphuric acid or sulphate are separated. Reduction of sulphur dioxide to elementary sulphur is carried out in gas phase by adding a reducing carbonaceous material such as hydrocarbons.
EFFECT: invention enables to process exhaust gases containing sulphur dioxide to sulphur and sulphuric acid or sulphate.
