FIELD: gas purification. SUBSTANCE: gas to be purified is treated with aqueous solution containing sulfur compounds followed by treating aqueous solution with sulfide-oxidizing bacteria in presence of oxygen to yield elementary sulfur. Sulfur is then separated and solution returned into washing stage. According to invention, , washing is performed at pH 6-9 with aqueous solution containing buffer compounds such as carbonate and/or bicarbonate, and/or phosphate in concentration from 20 to 2000 mequiv/l supplemented with 0.1-50 g/l of elementary sulfur to facilitate separation of formed sulfur. When sulfur dioxide is to be removed, aqueous solution, prior to be treated by sulfide-oxidizing bacteria, is subjected to reduction of sulfur compounds to sulfide, which is achieved using sulfur-reducing bacteria and adjusting buffer compound concentration to 20-200 mequiv/l. EFFECT: enhanced treatment efficiency and facilitated sulfur separation. 11 cl, 2 dwg, 1 tbl
