SUBSTANCE: system and method of imaging an ultrasonic analysis volume are provided. An external image of the ultrasonic analysis volume is generated. Part of the external image corresponds to part of the ultrasonic analysis volume. A composite ultrasonic analysis image is generated using the external image, wherein part of the external image is replaced with the internal image of part of the ultrasonic analysis volume. The internal image can be generated by changing the value of the imaging parameter used to generate the external image to a value which is more suitable for displaying the internal image. The ultrasonic analysis volume can include an organic structure, wherein the external image displays the outer surface of the organic structure, and the internal image displays the vascular system of the organic structure such that the composite image simultaneously displays the outer surface and the vascular system of the organic structure.
