FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: liquid crystal display device has a first substrate and a second substrate and a liquid crystal layer between the first substrate and the second substrate. The first substrate has a first comb-type electrode, having a first branching section, and a second comb-type electrode, having a second branching section. The first and second electrodes lie in the same plane, one lying opposite the other in a pixel. The liquid crystal layer contains p-type nematic liquid crystals and is excited by an electric field formed between the first electrode and the second electrode. The p-type nematic liquid crystals are aligned perpendicular to the surfaces of the first and second substrates when no voltage is applied. The first and second branching sections continue on a diagonal relative the boundary line between adjacent pixels, and the distance between the first electrode and the second electrode is essentially uniform in the region surrounding the end of the first branching section.
EFFECT: mitigating formation of an afterimage.
