FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: liquid crystal display device includes a liquid crystal display element which includes a pair of substrates and a liquid crystal layer which is sealed between the pair of substrates. The liquid crystal layer includes a p-type liquid crystal material which is homeotropically aligned relative the surfaces of the pair of substrates when no voltage is applied. One of the pair of substrates includes a comb-like electrode and a first alignment layer which is configured to adjust alignment of the p-type liquid crystal material. The other of the pair of substrates includes a second alignment layer which is configured to adjust alignment of the p-type liquid crystal material. The first alignment layer has cohesive energy of not more than 1.5×10-4 J/m2.

EFFECT: suppressing display defects arising from disruption of the alignment of the liquid crystal.
