FIELD: information technology.

SUBSTANCE: method involves authentication of protected documents, particularly banknotes, having security features (41-49; 30; 10; 51, 52), printed on the protected documents or superimposed or deposited thereon using another method and having characteristic visual features inherent to processes used to make the protected documents. A sample image (c⁰) of at least one region (R.o.l) of interest of the surface of the inspected document which covers at least part of said security features is obtained; said sample image (c⁰) undergoes digital processing by decomposing said sample image (c⁰) into at least one scaled subspace containing details (d¹ ₁, d¹ ₂, d¹ ₃…) with high resolution of the sample image (c⁰); classification features (σ², C…) are extracted from said scaled subspace and the authentication coefficient of the inspected document is calculated based on the extracted classification features (σ², C…).

EFFECT: high accuracy of authentication.
