FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: detecting measurement is carried out by transmitting short light pulses in a wide wavelength range into the medium from a light source, known as a detecting light source, and detecting a portion of light backscattered by the medium using a time resolution detecting module. Reference measurement is carried out by transmitting short light pulses into the medium from a light source, known as a reference light source, whose characteristics are identical to those of the detecting light source, and detecting a portion of light backscattered by the medium using a time resolution detecting module. The emitted light and the backscattered light is filtered using controlled filtering means, while reproducing the optical spectrum of light with operating wavelengths of at least one unknown compound. Results of the detecting measurement and reference measurement are compared in order to determine possible presence of an unknown compound(s) in the medium. The controlled filtering means are dynamically modified, wherein for a range of different compounds possibly present in the medium, a range of reference measurements and a range of corresponding comparisons are carried out.
