FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to an improved method of producing aqueous solution of glyoxylic acid by oxidising aqueous glyoxal solution with oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas, where said oxidation is carried out in the presence of a catalytic amount of nitric acid and/or at least one nitrogen oxide in amount of 0.005-0.1 mol/mol glyoxal, in the presence of a strong acid which does not oxidise glyoxal, and while maintaining conditions which satisfy the equation Kla/Q>10, where Kla is the overall volume coefficient of mass transfer (h-1) and Q is the heat load released during the reaction (W/mol glyoxal).
EFFECT: method enables to obtain high output of glyoxylic acid, high conversion of glyoxal and reduce consumption of nitric acid and/or nitrogen oxides.
