FIELD: organic chemistry. SUBSTANCE: method is carried out by interaction of phenol with sodium nitrite and sulfuric acid in aqueous medium. Said interaction takes place in inert medium, molar ratio of phenol, sodium nitrite, sulfuric acid and water being 1.00:(1.05-1.40):(2.00-2.30):(80-100) respectively. Initially aqueous solution of sodium nitrite (calculated amount) interacts with aqueous solutions of phenol and sulfuric acid (their quantities being 45-55% of calculated value). Said process takes place at 0-10 C within 30-60 min. Residual amount of aqueous solutions of phenol and sulfuric acid are then added into reaction mixture within 30-60 min at 0-10 C. Thus prepared mixture is allowed to stand within 30-60 min at 5-15 C. EFFECT: increases yield of desired product, improves its purity, decreases expense of raw materials, decreases waste. 2 cl, 1 tbl
