SUBSTANCE: communication network comprises a base station and a wireless terminal which communicates over an air-interface with the base station. The base station performs identification or categorisation of the wireless terminal during a ranging procedure. The identification or categorisation pertains to whether or not the wireless terminal has an enhanced capability. The categorisation is performed based on a transmission characteristic of the wireless terminal. The base station can then communicate with the wireless terminal so as to utilise the enhanced capability of the wireless terminal.
EFFECT: matching resource allocation and terminal capabilities.
