FIELD: radio engineering, communication.

SUBSTANCE: method involves emitting an electromagnetic wave whose orientation angle of polarisation plane and ellipticity angle are monotonously varied. The emitted electromagnetic wave which has passed through the medium is received and modulated. Further, signal envelopes are formed from the modulated received electromagnetic wave and eigen polarisation of the medium is determined. The apparatus has a transmitting device 1 and a receiving device 2. The transmitting device 1 has a first synchronisation unit 3 consisting of a satellite GPS receiver 4 and a highly stable vibration generator and second marks 5, a first synchronised generator 6 and a first polarisation converter 7 which includes a polarisation splitter 8, first and second rotating sections 9 and 10 of a circular waveguide, an antenna 11, first and second stepper motors 12, first and second position angle sensors 13 and a controller 14. The receiving device 2 has a second synchronisation unit 3, a second polarisation converter 7 and a detector 15. The detector includes first and second frequency converters 16, a second synchronised generator 6, first and second analogue-to-digital converters 17, a frequency divider 18, a digital generator 19, first and second digital quadrature component formers 20 and a processor 21.

EFFECT: broader functional capabilities of analysing electromagnetic signal propagation media.
