SUBSTANCE: in order to improve operational characteristics of a location system by increasing brightness and contrast on location images of observation objects (targets) with a low ratio of the level of signals reflected from targets to the level of signals reflected from the signal background (when detecting rubber boats on a water surface), or a low ratio of the level of signals reflected from the background to the level of signals reflected from targets (when detecting oil spills (slicks) on a water surface), and also enable to pick out fixed targets having moving elements (antenna posts with rotating antennae) or helicopters with rotating propellers or fixed and moving underwater targets, according to the method of forming a location image, involving cyclic irradiation of the investigated space, selecting within its boundaries spatial resolution elements, receiving signals reflected from location objects in corresponding resolution elements, and forming a location image; for each resolution element for a defined number of cycles of scanning the investigated space, statistical characteristics of reflected signals are determined and a location image is formed, the brightness of elements of which is determined by the value of the corresponding statistical characteristic of reflected signals or a result of functional transformation of one or more statistical characteristics of reflected signals.

EFFECT: improved operational characteristics of the location system.
