SUBSTANCE: method involves estimating the last non-zero coefficient of a video block, wherein estimating the last non-zero coefficient involves approximating costs associated with coding the video block via context-based adaptive binary arithmetic coding (CABAC), wherein different ones of the approximated costs correspond to different coefficients being the last non-zero coefficient, wherein the estimated last non-zero coefficient defines a lowest approximated cost; and generating a set of quantised coefficients for the video block based on the assumption that the estimated last non-zero coefficient is actually the last non-zero coefficient of the video block.
EFFECT: high efficiency of quantisation of video block coefficients for the video coding process which supports CABAC while providing the required balance between coding rate and distortion at the quantisation step of video coding.
