FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to an improved method for continuous production of methyl mercaptan, which can be used in chemical industry. The disclosed multi-step method involves conducting a step 1 of reacting a starting mixture of carbon- and hydrogen-containing compounds with air or oxygen and optionally water to obtain a gaseous mixture which contains CO2, CO and H2; at step 2, this gaseous mixture at least at 5 bar and 200°C reacts with liquid or gaseous sulphur and molar ratio of CO2, CO, H2 and H2S is kept in the range from 1:0.1:1:0 to 1:1:10:10 by feeding water or hydrogen and optionally hydrogen sulphide, after which at step 3, the gaseous mixture obtained at step 2 at least at 5 bar and 200°C undergoes chemical conversion on a catalyst to obtain a reaction mixture which contains methyl mercaptan as the basic reaction product; at step 4, said methyl mercaptan is separated and at step 5, after separating gaseous by-products, unreacted starting substances after optional reaction with water are returned into the process to obtain a gaseous mixture at step 1, whose pressure is at least 5 bar and which, without further compression, is fed to the next steps.
EFFECT: novel efficient method of producing methyl mercaptan is disclosed.
