FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of converting dimethyl sulphide to methyl mercaptan, involving: contacting dimethyl sulphide with a catalyst in the presence of excess hydrogen sulphide to obtain a final product of a reactor containing methyl mercaptan, hydrogen sulphide and carbon sulphide, wherein the catalyst contains aluminium oxide, NiMo on an aluminium oxide support, CoMo on an aluminium oxide support or a combination thereof, where the contacting step is carried out at a molar ratio of hydrogen sulphide to dimethyl sulphide of at least 3:1 and where the contacting step is carried out at weight average temperature in range of 250 °C to 305 °C, as well as to a combined methyl mercaptan production plant using the disclosed method.
EFFECT: disclosed is a method of converting dimethyl sulphide to methyl mercaptan.
