FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: simulation is carried out using a computer (2) having an input device (11) and an output device (6), a welding torch (3), a magnetic position monitoring device having at least one sensor and a plurality of sensor elements. A visualisation device (16) serves for generating a two- or three-dimensional image on the output device (6). A retaining device (15) has a recess for a workpiece (4). At least one sensor of the position monitoring device lies below the recess at a minimal a distance from the workpiece. The retaining device (15) is in form of a small, portable box to be placed on a table (10).

EFFECT: reduced size and easier use.
