SUBSTANCE: multimedia server has access to multiple multimedia channels, and a user terminal generates and transits a common, channel-transparent session request to the multimedia server. The request initiates a common, channel-transparent procedure of establishing a multimedia session between the terminal and the multimedia server. The procedure entails exchanging requests and responses, but the multimedia channel is selected or reported to the multimedia server. The user terminal transmits a channel-specific rendering request for the required multimedia channel to the multimedia server; during subsequent channel switching, the terminal simply transmits the new channel-specific request for a new channel to the multimedia server during the current session and reuses the matched transport parameters of the channel-transparent establishment procedure.
