SUBSTANCE: method of operation of a vertical prismatic furnace by means of tangential input of jets of a reagent gas and air mixture along the vertical axis of the furnace and air along the walls, supply of steam jets, flows of the mixture of air, gaseous combustion products and coal particles with size of 2-4 mm, heating of these particles with a gas torch, produced in the furnace during oxidation of gas with air oxygen, with removal of moisture and volatile substances and formation of a coke residue, gravity separation of particles with a coke residue to the centre of the bottom with collection into a layer, their subsequent cooling and removal of coke residue to the consumer in subfurnace plants, flows of the mixture of air and gaseous combustion products and coal particles are introduced into air flows radially relative to the vertical axis of the furnace with the speed of 0.10-0.24 of the speed of input of air jets, and steam jets get into a layer of coke residue particles formed in the centre of the bottom.

EFFECT: reduced carry-over of coal and coke particles with a gas torch from a furnace, reduced extent of burning of released coke residue.
