SUBSTANCE: method involves: (a) applying an alkaline cleaner onto at least a portion of the substrate, (b) rinsing at least a portion of the substrate that has undergone step (a) with water, (c) applying an acid cleaner onto at least a portion of the substrate after alkaline cleaning, (d) rinsing at least a portion of the substrate that has undergone step (c) with water and (e) applying a coating which chemically reacts with the substrate which contains zirconium onto at least a portion of the acid cleaned substrate, wherein at least one of the materials used in steps (c) and (e) is substantially chromium-free, (f) rinsing at least a portion of the substrate that has undergone step (e) with water; and (g) depositing an electrodeposition coating composition onto at least a portion of the coating which chemically reacts with the substrate, wherein the electrodeposition coating composition contains a corrosion inhibitor which contains azole compounds which include benzotriazole, 3-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole, 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole, 1-methylbenzotriazole or combinations thereof. The invention also relates to a substrate, such as an aluminium substrate, which is coated using said method.
