SUBSTANCE: invention relates to communication engineering and can be used in wireless communication systems. An apparatus and method for initialisation and mapping of reference signals in a communication system are disclosed. In one version of the present invention, the apparatus includes a processor and memory including computer program code. The memory and the computer program code are configured to, with the processor, cause the apparatus to generate a reference signal used with a plurality of physical resource blocks corresponding to a bandwidth of a communication system, and allocate resource elements of an assigned physical resource block from the plurality of physical resource blocks to user equipment. The memory and the computer program code are further configured to, with the processor, cause the apparatus to generate a dedicated reference signal for the user equipment by allocating elements of the reference signal in accordance with allocated resource elements of the assigned physical resource block.
