SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for selective hydrogenation of acetylene to ethylene, which involves: contacting a raw material stream containing ethylene and acetylene with a catalyst in reaction conditions to form an outgoing stream with low amount of acetylene, wherein the catalyst is a layered catalyst, having an inner core containing an inert material, an outer layer bonded to the inner core, wherein the outer layer contains a metal oxide, which contains a first metal deposited on the outer layer, where the first metal is from groups 8-10 of the IUPAC table, and a second metal deposited on the outer layer, where the second metal is a metal from groups 11 and 14 of the IUPAC; and the catalyst has an accessibility coefficient between 3 and 500, or a pore volume coefficient between 0 and 1, or an accessibility coefficient between 3 and 500 and a pore volume coefficient between 0 and 1.
