FIELD: instrumentation.

SUBSTANCE: proposed group of inventions relates to instrumentation, in particular, it is intended for monitoring a shaft of a rotating machine. Method to monitor signal related with the rotating machine shaft includes the stages at which the voltage signals related with the shaft are received, current signals related with the shaft are received, tendency for maximal values of shaft voltage and current is calculated and analysed, tendency for average values of shaft voltage and current is calculated and analysed, tendency for shaft voltage harmonic factor is calculated and analysed, a synchronisation signal is received allowing for the synchronisation of the received signal with the excitation waveform, a current signal is resolved by time, the group of time resolved current signals is linked to the faulty state, the faulty state is defined by the maximal values of shaft voltage and current, average values of shaft voltage and current, shaft voltage harmonic factor and the group of time resolved current signals and a user is informed on the faulty state in case there is any. The signal monitoring system comprises a module for receiving voltage signals from a voltage brush, a module for receiving current signals from a current brush, a synchronisation module, a processor, a data base, a user interface, an alarm module.
