SUBSTANCE: invention relates to wireless communication. A method and apparatus for power control in a wireless communication system are disclosed. The method includes assigning an uplink (UL) control channel to a MS from a base station, determining a location to receive a transmit power control (TPC) command based on the UL control channel, and receiving a TPC command in the determined location and increasing or decreasing transmit power, thereby enabling the reduction of overhead for power control command assignment information.
