FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to intumescent compositions which are curable at ambient temperature, use thereof to protect structures, and substrates coated with said composition. The intumescent composition contains A) binder, containing (i) a resin which contains a polysiloxane chain or a precursor of said chain, and (ii) optionally an organic resin, and (iii) at least one type of a functional group selected from a group comprising epoxy resin, an amino group, a mercaptan group, a carboxylic acid group, an acrylonitrile group, an isocyanate group, an alkoxysilyl group and an anhydride group, wherein said functional groups are present either as side and/or terminal groups in said resin, which includes a polysiloxane chain or a precursor of said chain, and/or an organic resin, under the condition that if the binder contains alkoxysilyl groups only as one type of said functional groups, then said alkoxysilyl groups are present in the organic resin, B) a compound capable of reacting with or which is a catalyst in the reaction between functional groups and C) a foaming agent and a phosphorus-containing substance as a carbon-forming secondary additive.
