FIELD: physics, optics.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to liquid crystal display backlight devices. According to the first version of the device, the backlight assembly includes a waveguide with a plurality of light-emitting diodes (LED) positioned in cavities in the back surface in the centre of the waveguide. The back surface of the waveguide can be tapered from the centre region to the edges so that the edges are thinner than the centre region. In another version of the device, multiple waveguides are be used and arranged at an angle to form a "V" shape.
EFFECT: minimising bezel and thickness of waveguide edges.
