SUBSTANCE: invention discloses an illumination device having: non-laser light-emitting diode (LED) for lateral radiation has a plurality of light-emitting side walls, each light-emitting side wall having an upper section and a lower section; wherein the LED emits light from its light-emitting side walls without use of a lateral radiation lens; and an optical element, wherein each of the light-emitting side walls of the LED is optically connected to the optical element; the optical element has a lower edge wherein light directed below the lower edge of the optical element does not enter the optical element; wherein the lower edge of the optical element lies on the level of or below the lower section of the light-emitting side wall; a substrate on which the LED is mounted; and a first silicone section formed on top of the substrate and around the LED, wherein the top surface of the first silicone section has a curvilinear shape, the curvilinear shape gently rising up towards the LED and ending below the light-emitting side walls of the LED; the first silicone section has a first refraction index; the optical element has a second silicone section formed on top of the top surface of the first silicone section and adjoining it, the second silicone section having a second refraction index which is higher than the first refraction index so that there is total internal reflection of light of the LED on the boundary of the first silicone section and the second silicone section.
EFFECT: invention provides essentially uniform radiation by a backlighting device so as not to distort brightness of an image displayed by a liquid crystal display, and provides a thin but efficient source of directed light.
