SUBSTANCE: invention relates to navigation systems. The system comprises a navigation unit operating using map data and a storage medium which can be connected to and disconnected from the navigation unit, wherein the storage medium has a rewritable data region in which map data are recorded, a non-rewritable control region in which identification information of the storage medium are recorded. The updating right information includes information relating to the right to update map data recorded on the storage medium and needed to update map data recorded in the data region. The updating right information is read from the data region and is deleted from said data region during first access to the data of said storage medium through the navigation unit, and the suitable map updating time created based on the read updating right information is recorded in the memory of the navigation unit along with identification information of said storage medium read from the control region.
