FIELD: physics, optics.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a security element having a carrier with a first and a second surface opposite each other, wherein the first surface has a patterned region with variable optical properties, having a relief patterned region and a coating, wherein the coating is formed by substantially nonlinear basic elements. The relief patterned region and the coating are superimposed such that at least certain portions of the coating are completely visible when viewed at a right angle and are hidden when viewed at an acute angle. The relief patterned region is in form of depressions on the second surface of the carrier and at least certain portions of the coating are located in said depressions. The nonlinear basic elements are at least partly located on lateral sides of the depressions, where in each case a depression and basic elements located on its lateral sides together form one structural element.
EFFECT: disclosed security element improves counterfeit protection.
