FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: one previously unutilised opportunity to save energy is using two similar fractionation columns operating at different pressure to separate C8 aromatic compounds from C9+ aromatic compounds. A stream removed from below the second xylene column at the fraction step enables to supply heat to a reboiler which is under pressure of the raffinate column.
EFFECT: similar columns enable further energy-saving within the apparatus owing to heat exchange with interlinked equipment involved in xylene extraction.
