FIELD: power engineering.
SUBSTANCE: nuclear reactor fuel element comprises a tubular shell tightly sealed by end parts by means of welding made of zirconium alloy. Inside the tubular shell there are fuel pellets from uranium dioxide. The tubular shell is made with oval cross section and twisted. The volume between the inner surface of the tubular shell and fuel pellets is filled with vibration compaction by balls from aluminium alloy, for instance, from C-80 alloy. Thickness of the tubular shell makes at least 0.3 mm, the ball diameter is 1.5-2 mm. At the same time the mathematical ratio of shell rib diameter to shell shelf diameter is met.
EFFECT: reduced level of acting stresses in fuel element shell material and absence of spacer grids during assembly of fuel elements into cassettes.
