FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a coating pigment composition for paper and/or cardboard. The composition contains a binder substitute in form of an aqueous dispersion of a styrene-acrylate copolymer with content of solid substance of 10-50%. The copolymer is a product of free-radical emulsion copolymerisation of a styrene monomer or substituted monomer thereof - α-methylstyrene or vinyl toluene or a mixture thereof with an acrylate monomer from C₁-C₄ alkyl acrylates or C₁-C₄ alkyl methacrylates in the presence of starch. The mean particle size of the copolymer is less than 40-70 nm. Also described is paper or cardboard coated with said coating pigment composition.

EFFECT: invention reduces the amount of latex binder in the composition while preserving or improving strength properties of coated paper or cardboard.
