FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for free radical polymerisation of dextrin with at least two hydrophobic monomers, wherein said dextrin is at least 60 % by weight of the total weight of dextrin and hydrophobic monomers and is characterised by a weight average molecular weight in the range from 60,000 to 2,000,000 Da, hydrophobic monomers are represented by styrene and at least one linear or branched C1-C4-acrylic ester, wherein the weight ratio of styrene: ester ranges from 10:90 to 90:10, the polymerisation occurs in the presence of a free radical polymerisation initiator, which is persulphate, in a dose of 0.5 % to 2.5 %, based on the dry weight relative to the dry weight dextrin. Invention relates to a copolymer of dextrin and at least two hydrophobic monomers represented by styrene and at least one straight or branched C1-C4-acrylic ester. Invention also relates to the use of said copolymer in paper coating.
EFFECT: said copolymer has a high dextrin content (> 60 % by weight relative to the weight of dextrin and hydrophobic monomers), thus giving preference to the aspect of the biological origin of the material and provides very good hydrophobicity of the paper sheet.
