FIELD: process engineering.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to smoothing of surface (2) of major structural element (3) of, for example, ship hull, for its further varnishing. Proposed method comprises the following steps. Measurement of irregularities of surface (2) of structural element (3), smoothing said irregularities by removal of material and/or application of levelling bulk, application of reference marks at definite points of said structural element (3) before measurement of surface (2) with due allowance for said reference marks in measurement of said surface (2).
EFFECT: higher accuracy of measurement and efficiency of smoothing.
