FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: method includes performing such operations as obtaining a three-dimensional (3D) medical image, determining a set of search points, extracting features of said points, forming a set of candidates of desired anatomical points, filtering said candidates, outputting final positions of the desired anatomical points; the set of search points is determined by setting an array of search points within the 3D image using a statistical atlas; features of the points are extracted by selecting the surrounding context for each said point; the set of candidates is formed by calculating a quality measure for each search point and for each type of desired anatomical points; the candidates are filtered using a statistical atlas and pre-calculated thresholds for quality measure values; final positions are output by sorting all candidates left after filtering within each type of desired anatomical points according to the quality thereof and outputting candidates with the greatest quality measure values or the required number of candidates with the greatest quality measure values.

EFFECT: high accuracy of automatic detection of anatomical points in 3D medical images.
