SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to vented nuclear reactor fuel elements. The method includes using a fuel assembly with a cover which is adapted to hold a porous mass of nuclear fuel with a volatile nuclear fission product. The method includes using a fluid medium control subunit connected to the cover and adapted to control removal of at least a portion of the volatile nuclear fission products from the porous mass of nuclear fuel. Furthermore, the fluid medium control subunit circulates the heat-removing fluid medium through the porous mass of nuclear fuel to remove heat produced by the nuclear fuel mass.

EFFECT: enabling controlled removal of volatile nuclear fission products and heat released by the combustion wave in a travelling-wave nuclear fission reactor.
