FIELD: atomic physics.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to travelling-wave nuclear reactors and particularly to fuel assemblies configured for controlled removal of a volatile fission product and heat released by the combustion wave in the nuclear reactor. The fuel assembly has a cover which is configured to hold a porous mass of nuclear fuel with a volatile fission product. A fluid medium control subunit is connected to the cover and is configured to control removal of at least a portion of the volatile fission product from the porous mass of nuclear fuel. Furthermore, the fluid medium control subunit is configured to circulate the heat-removing fluid medium through the porous mass of nuclear fuel to remove heat produced by the nuclear fuel mass.
EFFECT: providing high and sustained burnup of fuel.
