FIELD: measurement equipment.

SUBSTANCE: use: for ultrasonic control of a welded joint of a butt connection of two transverse ends of two metal strips. The substance of the invention consists in the fact that ends of two metal strips are shifted and held between the first and second gripping jaws (2a, 2b), arranged along each of transverse ends, at the same time the first and second gripping jaws have between each other at least such gap, when there is a clearance (54, 55) for passing of the first channel (52) of transmission of incident waves, capable of generating ultrasonic waves on the surface of the first strip, and for passing of the second channel (61) of transmission of waves leaving the surface of the second strip; incident waves of the first channel are generated using the laser pulses in the mode at least specified for application of the third channel of ultrasonic waves generated on the surface of the first strip, passing via the welded joint and reaching to the second channel; on the basis of the stage of analysis (7) of the mode related to pulses, and at least one measurement of a property, such as signature of condition of vibration of the surface of the second strip at the exit of ultrasonic waves into the second channel, they determine characteristics of welded joint control.

EFFECT: provision of the possibility to control external and internal defects of a butt connection joint of two transverse ends of two metal strips before their release from a position of pressing between gripping jaws.
