FIELD: railways restoration.
SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in the restoration, repair or reconstruction of railways by thermite welding without removing the rails from the track. The casting mold is installed in the place of the welding gap, the crucible with the casting component is placed above the casting mold, the thermite reaction is initiated, the casting component is melted, the molten metal is tapped into the casting mold and the welded metal is held in the casting mold. 60 seconds after the end of the discharge of molten metal from the crucible into the casting mold, control of the change in the width of the welding gap is started and carried out for 150 seconds. The conclusion about the formation of an internal defect "hot crack" in the weld is made in the case of an increase in the specified period of time the width of the welding gap by at least 0.2 mm or in the case of a decrease in the width of the welding gap by at least 2 mm.
EFFECT: improving the quality of welding work due to the identification of an internal defect "hot cracks" in the welded seam.
