FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: method includes first obtaining a hydrogenated aromatic compound in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst, separating the obtained compound from the reaction mixture and purifying the compound. The purified compound is used as a hydrogen carrier for storage and/or transportation thereof. Hydrogen is produced by dehydrogenating the hydrogenated aromatic compound in the presence of a dehydrogenation catalyst. The aromatic compound is hydrogenated using a reaction gas obtained via a reforming reaction and a conversion reaction, said gas containing 30-70 vol % hydrogen. The aromatic compound used can be toluene, and the hydrogenated aromatic compound is methylcyclohexane. Methanation of the remaining carbon monoxide in the reaction gas is performed at the same time as hydrogenation of the aromatic compound.
EFFECT: invention enables efficient production of an organic hydride on an industrial scale at a low cost.
